A small northwest-facing courtyard in a Georgian terrace in Camden, designed as a calm retreat with layered planting, water and vertical greenery.
The design combines a contemporary approach with subtle Moorish influences, bringing together structure, texture and planting within a compact urban space.
THE GARDEN
Making the most of a small courtyard
The brief was to create a tranquil garden that would make full use of the limited space while responding to its northwest-facing aspect.
A green wall introduces planting vertically, allowing more greenery into the garden without reducing the usable space. A pergola adds structure and helps create a sense of enclosure, while the water feature brings sound and movement into the courtyard.
Greenery, texture and wildlife
The planting is designed to be relatively low maintenance while adding softness, texture and seasonal interest to the garden.
Plants are selected with birds and pollinators in mind, creating a courtyard that feels planted and inviting while also offering value to wildlife.
Contemporary with a Moorish influence
The final design brings a contemporary simplicity to the courtyard, softened by details influenced by Moorish gardens. Together, the planting, water and architectural elements create a small garden that feels calm, enclosed and connected to the house.
